Media Trip – Tribal Warrior Aboriginal Cultural Cruise

Contributors – Raj Suri, Lin Kuang

On April 17, 2026, FCA members embarked on a powerful journey into the world’s oldest living culture aboard the Mari Nawi (“big canoe”), cruising the waters of Sydney Harbour with the Eora Nation—the traditional custodians of these lands and waters.

The experience was anchored by a visit to Be-tri (Clark Island), where members received a formal welcome from men and women of the nation. The arrival was marked by traditional face painting and a spirited kangaroo dance, grounding the group in the deep spiritual connections between the land, water, and people.

Guided by the Eora people—including the Cadigal, Guringai, Wangal, Gammeraigal, and Wallumedegal clans—members gained firsthand insight into the sophisticated ways these communities have thrived for millennia. This included a masterclass in ancient fishing techniques, where guides demonstrated how the Eora read the sea tides to time their harvests, ensuring sustainability and connection to the ecosystem.

Beyond these practices, the trip offered a deeper look at the enduring strength of Aboriginal culture, reflecting on both pre-colonial life and the impacts of colonisation. The day concluded with the profound storytelling and song that define the Eora experience.
