Historical Maori Treaty of Waitangi under threat in New Zealand
Explains Dr Carwyn Jones at an online FCA Briefing, 1 February 2024
FCA Members had an exclusive opportunity to know first hand about Treaty of Waitangi, referred as “Te Tiriti”, its Context, Legal Status, Treaty principles, Claims and settlement and the recent Government proposals, as explained by Dr Carwyn Jones.
Dr Jones is a member of the Māori iwi (nation), Ngāti Kahungunu. He is the Lead Academic in the Māori Laws and Philosophy programme at Te Wānanga o Raukawa and an Honorary Adjunct Professor at the School of Māori Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.
FCA members were given insights on the important treaty and the proposed changes to it by the current government by Dr Jones and answered questions in detail from the media members.
Treaty of Waitangi is document of importance to the history of New Zealand since the settlement, drafted in 1840 in its constitution.
