Briefing: Life inside Nauru detention centre
November 29, 2013
While most of us must have done at least one story featuring Nauru detention centre, only very few journalists will have actually visited the facility. Access to the centre is highly restricted and the cost of flights and accommodation make it almost impossible to make the trip profitable. Therefore hardly anyone knows first hand what life is like for asylum seekers on Nauru. We have invited several insiders for a briefing to share their experiences with us. Ian Rintoul Ian is a refugee lawyer and member of the Refugee Action Coalition. He can talk about national and international legislation, onshore/off shore processing, ASIO security assessment and what he feels are lies told by the Australian government. Mark Isaacs After seeing the conditions inside the camp, this former Salvation Army worker on Nauru decided to speak up and joined the activists. He can tell about his experiences inside the detention centre. When: Friday 29 November 14:30 – 16:00 Where: King Street Theatre 1st level of 644 King St (corner Bray St) Newtown.
