Afternoon Tea with John Coates, President of the Australian Olympic Committee
November 13 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
FCA Members invited to an afternoon tea briefing with the President of the Australian Olympic Committee and chairman of the International Olympic Committee’s Coordination Commission, John Coates AC.
Caught in a political storm, John Coates will talk to Foreign Correspondents about the decision to move the Tokyo 2020 marathon and race-walking away from Tokyo, despite opposition from local officials. Coates was sent to Japan to defend IOC’s determination that those events will be transferred to Sapporo, Hokkaido, to avoid the heat.
Tokyo 2020 Coordination Commission Chairman will also talk about Japan’s progress organising the games, managing issues regarding transportation and the “unparalleled interest in ticket sales”.
Brisbane’s bid for the 2032 Olympic Games is also a matter to be discussed. Coates is urging the Queensland government to commission an assessment of the cost of staging a Brisbane and regional Games as the rules are about to change to enable the host to be appointed as early as next year.
